The Facebook Justice Gone Wrong: My Case

On Thursday 23rd January 2025 , I found myself caught in what I can only describe as a Kafkaesque scenario with Facebook. Without prior notice, my account was flagged for allegedly violating “community standards,” and within a shockingly short time, my entire digital presence was wiped out. Let me break down the sequence of events and the impact this has had on my work and life.

The Timeline of Events

  • 14:02: I received a notification claiming that “my group” had violated Facebook’s community standards.
  • 14:06: I received an email stating that my account was suspended for 180 days, during which I could appeal the decision. The email also provided an option to file an appeal, which I did (unfortunately, I do not remember the exact time). However, once the account was suspended, I could no longer access Facebook to investigate or understand the details of the alleged violation.
  • Less than an hour after submitting my appeal, I received Facebook’s final verdict: my account was permanently disabled. No explanation, no transparency, no justice.

It is important to highlight that no one—not myself nor anyone else—can be reasonably expected to read and react to every email immediately. The four-minute gap between the initial email and the suspension notice is utterly absurd. Expecting such a swift response is unrealistic and highlights the lack of fairness in Facebook’s process. Furthermore, the inability to access Facebook after the suspension makes it impossible to investigate the claims or defend oneself adequately.

The Aftermath

  1. Complete Erasure:
    • All my posts across various groups—both those I manage and those I participated in—were deleted.
    • In groups where I was the admin (e.g., Serendipity Management and Karhukopla), even my chosen cover photos were replaced with generic Facebook images.
  2. No Contact:
    • My entire contact list, built over 20 years, is gone. My global network of over 2,000 personal connections and 795 members of my Serendipity Management group vanished without warning or notification.
    • Facebook has not responded to my direct emails or provided any specific evidence regarding the alleged violations.

The False Accusation

The crux of Facebook’s claim lies in a group called “HUMANITY’s Core Values League Global (HK/Macao) Outpost by Ario Ku,” which they allege belongs to me. Here are the facts:

  • I did not create this group.
  • I have never posted, commented, or liked anything in this group.
  • I do not understand the language (likely Chinese) in which its posts are written.
  • I do not even recall joining this group.

It’s maybe technically possible that someone made me an admin without my knowledge or consent. Facebook has the tools to verify such changes, including timestamps and IP addresses, but I’ve been denied access to any such investigation or response.

Serendipity or Catastrophe?

As someone who deeply values the dynamics of unexpected discoveries, I’ve often celebrated serendipity in my work. However, this situation hardly feels “lucky” or serendipitous. Instead, it feels like a catastrophe—one that lacks the fortunate twist we often associate with serendipity. Perhaps this is closer to what I might call “zemlanity,” a term for dramatic, unexpected chaos with no clear silver lining.

However, we do not know yet. Time will tell, and even this might turn into serendipity after weeks or months. This just emphasizes the fact that luck, in these cases, is an end result—if any.

The Broader Impact

This is not just a personal inconvenience. As an author preparing to launch a book, my Facebook account was a key platform for reaching a loyal audience. Years of effort building my presence have been erased in an instant. My ability to connect with readers and promote my work has been severely compromised.

One of the core ideas for my book project was to make the writing process interactive—collaborating with future readers to brainstorm and refine ideas. The Serendipity Management group on Facebook was designed to be the central hub for this engagement. Losing access to this group has completely disrupted that vision and removed the main stage for what was meant to be a dynamic and participatory process.

What Comes Next?

This blog is the first part of my journey to document this experience. I aim to:

  • Expose the flaws in Facebook’s automated and opaque decision-making process.
  • Push for transparency and accountability from tech giants.
  • Explore alternative ways to rebuild my network and continue my work.

Serendipitor

One could describe me as an Explorer of my personal life, since I have been there – seen that, so many fascinating topics and projects over the past decades. I am the founder or co-founder of seven different companies since 1984 .- one could use the term “serial entrepreneur”, but I personally don’t like to be called that way. I believe that my life is a journey – and even though it sometimes looks like I am wandering around, I have a solid feeling that I am not lost. Read more
