An Invitation to Begin Your Peregrinaggio

An excerpt from the introduction to Authentic Serendipity

Dear readers, I invite you to begin your own Peregrinaggio—a pilgrimage of cultivating virtue and wisdom, whatever your aspirations or worldview. Writing this book became such a pilgrimage for me, challenging and reshaping my own values and beliefs. My hope is that reading it will encourage you to reflect on yours and become the best person you can be. That was the purpose of the Three Princes of Serendip’s pilgrimage—and it can be yours, too.

The following excerpt is taken from the introduction to my book, Authentic Serendipity — and Why We Need 21st-Century Jesters.

INTRODUCTION

Serendipity has become a buzzword, as Robert K. Merton warned already in the 1950s! Today, it is marketed as a productivity tool, a networking strategy, or a way to engineer “happy accidents.” In this noise, its original meaning has been lost — and with it, the deeper wisdom it can offer our organizations and our lives.

This book is my attempt to restore that meaning. It is not a self-help manual or a checklist of tricks. It will not give you eight steps to “become more serendipitous” (my previous book 2014 did). Instead, it is an invitation to a journey — a Peregrinaggio. Along the way, we will explore stories, ideas, and practices that may help you see the world differently. My hope is not to tell you what to think, but to help you think with more curiosity.

As you turn these pages, you will discover that serendipity is not about luck. It is about awareness, connection, empathy and courage — qualities that, once cultivated, can change not just individual lives, but entire communities and organizations.

When I began writing this book, I thought I was simply documenting a case study and sharing lessons from my twenty years of consulting work. I was wrong. What unfolded was a journey of discovery that changed me in ways I never expected. I became more curious, more playful, more authentic. There were long stretches of pure flow, when time disappeared and it was just me and my imagination. Along the way, I unearthed stories and insights that would have been lost forever — like the tale of netWorkOasis, a pioneering experiment in collaboration that needed to be preserved.

But perhaps the greatest surprise was this: as I was transforming, my understanding of serendipity was transforming too. What began as a celebration of “happy accidents” twenty years ago evolved into a deeper, more powerful realization — that serendipity is not luck, but a quality of mind and a force for collective change. This book is both a record of that journey and an invitation for you to embark on your own.

When I launched my book blog within www.respectserendipity.com my message was:

“We have been fooled by Horace Walpole for almost 300 years” — it’s time to unleash Authentic Serendipity and reveal a truth long buried in the 1557 Italian masterpiece Peregrinaggio di tre giovani figliuoli del re di Serendippo.

Here’s your first clue: Peregrinaggio is not an expedition.

The Three Princes were not lone geniuses stumbling upon “happy accidents.” They were collaborative jesters — masters of wit, observation, abduction, and teamwork to uncover hidden truths — designing brilliant setups, like the one that led to finding Diliramma, and another that foiled a poisoning plot against Emperor Beramo.

This book restores the real essence of serendipity and places the Jester — Koestler’s timeless archetype alongside the Sage and the Artist — back at the center stage. You’ll journey through the secrets of Authentic serendipity, the hidden wisdom of medieval court jesters, the science of bisociation, and the urgent call for the 21st-Century Jester to re-enter our organizations, ecosystems, and communities.

The concluding part of the book presents the Smile in Mind framework — a spotlight for the 21st-Century Jester to shine, fostering insight, dismantling stale thinking, and enabling collective serendipity in the Postnormal Era. After 40 years in business and two decades pioneering serendipity research, Ilkka Kakko distills a lifetime of lessons learned — provocative, practical, and transformational. This isn’t just a book. It’s an invitation to challenge your assumptions, ignite new possibilities, and join the Jesterhood movement.”

Now, I can honestly say, I kept my promise.

That’s what I will provide. Here is a short summon-up of the chapters:

  1. The Lost Origins of Serendipity- and the Emergence of Authentic Serendipity

This chapter is fundamental for understanding my perspective. I deep- dive to the origins of the Peregrinaggio di tre giovani figliuoli del re di Serendippo, together we will uncover inconsistencies, anomalies, translation errors, sloppy attitudes — and we will create a better story! This chapter asks patience from your side, it may feel too scientific and rigorous for readers not familiar with serendipity’s history and origins, but believe me, it was necessary.

  2. Koestler: Arthur Koestler – The Forgotten Genius of Creativity
This chapter introduces Arthur Koestler and his masterpiece The Act of Creation (1964). With this chapter, I aim to give Koestler the recognition he deserves, a place among the most respected reseachers and thinkers of 20th Century. Bisociation, jester-sage-artist archetypes and the logic of laughter are explained. The chapter also explains several cases where bisociation has fundamentally changed the world where we are living.
  3. Wisdom of the Court Jesters
Then we time-dive hundreds of years backward — to the times when court jesters flourished. This chapter showcases the stories of seven jesters + one trio. We will see how jesters were fundamental for the kings and emperors, here we rely on seasoned experts like Welsford, Otto, Outram. In the end we conclude our findings and use that when visioning the return of jesters to our societies and communities.
  4. From Legacy to Emergence: the 21st-Century Jester
In this chapter we use the lessons learned from chapters 1-3 to envision a new archetype: 21st-Century Jester. We explain why court jesters vanished and how Postnormal Era — a revolutionary paradigm shift we currently experience — is urgently asking jesters to re-enter the scene. We rely on latest research and also on real life experiences from the Netherlands and Oasis Way of Working from Finland.
  5. Smile in Mind — A Cognitive Infrastructure Where 21st-Century Jesters Flourish.
In this chapter we will conclude our journey. It’s my legacy of 20 + years in consultancy and years as a hobbyist serendipity researcher, known as Serendipitor. This chapter ensures also that lessons learned from our awesome netWork Oasis project from Joensuu, are documented for upcoming generations to search. Smile in Mind framework is presented based on strong theoretical and scientific argumentation and validated using netWork Oasis experiences and my customer cases as examples. It’s time to begin our journey — one that I hope will become your own Peregrinaggio.

I used to call myself an explorer of life — but over time I’ve realized that my journey is not about exploration. It’s been a series of Peregrinaggios — pilgrimages of the mind and heart. Life is far too sacred to be wandered through as a tourist. Better to travel it as a pilgrim, open to what unfolds, humbled by what reveals itself along the way. Read more
